International Research Travel Grants

International Research Travel Grants application and guidelines (doc)

Research travel grants, made available to regular, tenure-line faculty, will again be offered by the International Council to be used in the summer of 2008 or parts of the 2008-2009 academic year. Grants range from $1,000 to $4,000 per award. The source of these funds is an endowment initiated by a grant from the Hewlett Foundation that was matched by private donations and university funds. The International Council will review the proposals.

These grants are intended to fund travel and related expenses outside of the United States for purposes of international research, both basic and applied. Proposals will be judged primarily on perceived quality. Younger scholars, however, will be given a degree of priority. Proposals that reflect a research effort that is part of a longer term international research program will be given priority. See the above guidelines for more details on award criteria.

The definition of “international” for International Council funding purposes is somewhat elastic and will be determined in the end on a case-by-case basis. Speaking generally, however, fundable projects of international research include studies which:

a) Focus upon particular world cultural, geographical, political and/or economic areas, excluding contemporary USA;
b) Focus upon relationships among institutions in different nations or upon diplomatic or strategic policies; or
c) Generate international scientific or artistic data and/or analyses.
Both contemporary and historical studies are eligible.

Research travel must be for a period of at least two weeks. Successful applicants must be employed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign during the subsequent academic year, during which time recipients of grants will be expected to present results of their research travel in an appropriate forum (e.g., a brown-bag talk at the appropriate area studies center, a presentation in the department, etc.).

Funds awarded from this program may be used for travel costs, per diem, in-country expenses, and other related costs. Funds may not be used for faculty salary.

Applications will be due on November 30, 2007.
