TITLE VI Intensive Summer Institute Guidelines

"Intensive" language programs are a minimum of 120-140 contact hours of instruction, depending on the level and language of study. Students at the beginning and intermediate levels are expected to attend programs offering a minimum of 140 contact hours of language study, while advanced students may attend programs with fewer hours (but not less than 120). The summer FLAS award should provide each fellow with the equivalent of a full academic year's worth of language instruction—a minimum of 6 weeks. Applicants may study at any approved program in the United States or abroad. Overseas language programs must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Language study abroad must be at advanced level for all languages unless the language and level are not offered in the U.S.
