Study Abroad Development Grants Program 2008

Application Form

The Office of the Associate Provost for International Affairs (APIA) requests proposals for the Study Abroad Development Grants program. The purpose of the program is to facilitate the development of new or substantially revised faculty-led study abroad programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Specifically, the program seeks to:

  • Increase the number and variety of faculty-led programs at UIUC
  • Involve more UIUC faculty in leading study abroad experiences
  • Support the integration of study abroad experiences and on-campus curriculum

Grants awarded in this funding period will be for planning trips and other activities during spring and summer of 2008.

Funding Priorities

The following activities will have priority for funding:

  • Develop new for-credit study abroad experiences for UIUC students.
  • Develop integrated for-credit study abroad components for existing on-campus courses.
  • Modify existing on-campus courses to integrate with existing study abroad experience.

In all cases, successful applicants will be expected to submit a full study abroad program proposal through the appropriate campus channels upon their return, and, pending approval of the proposal, lead at least one iteration of the program.

Selection Criteria

  • Uniqueness of the proposed program (destination, discipline, content, etc.)
  • Projected ability to attract students
  • Accessibility to students from more than one discipline
  • Likelihood of program being offered repeatedly
  • Integration of intercultural learning with disciplinary content

Who is eligible

Full-time, tenured or tenure-stream faculty as well as academic professionals with a teaching appointment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible to submit an application. Successful applicants must be employed at UIUC during the subsequent academic year and are expected to lead at least one study abroad program developed with the help of the grant. The proposal must be endorsed by the applicant’s department chair or head.

Allowable Expenses

Travel and lodging for planning trips and other expenses justifiably related to the planning and development of new or substantially revised study abroad programs (media, books, research assistance) may be funded through this program. Faculty are encouraged to combine program development site visits with their own field research.

Funding Amount

Grant amounts will depend on the type of activity as well as destination and duration of the planning trip, but typically not exceed $2,500. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek additional funding from other sources. Evidence of additional funding will be considered favorably in the selection process.

Proposal Guidelines

Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with their relevant college contact from the list below before submitting a proposal. In addition, the proposal must be endorsed by the relevant department chair or head.

  • Proposal narratives are not to exceed three pages, single-spaced and should include the following:
  • Destination and itinerary, if applicable
  • Specifics on how the planning trip or activity will facilitate the development or revision of the study abroad program
  • Brief description of the program to be developed, indicating how the site abroad will be used to meet curricular objectives and enhance student academic and intercultural learning.
  • A budget (not included in page count)

A completed and signed Study Abroad Development Grants Program cover sheet must accompany the proposal narrative. Send all materials by the February 15 deadline to:
